Bill's story as emailed in July, 1999 (links added)...

"We were at Nootka Sound which is up north and west on Vancouver Island on the Ocean side. Stayed at a fishing cabin. There were 6 boats in our party. All related to Pat and Gary who are our friends on vacation from China. The place was magical like any Field and Stream Adventure you ever read about. We watched the Grey whales come very near our boat, blow their air and dive back down with their tails in the air. Big and loud(when they blow) and awesome. We enticed an Eagle to fly down from a perch and take a rock fish that we threw into the water in front of our cabin. This was just too cool, his wing span must have been 6 feet across and talons bigger than my hands. I caught a 27 pound King salmon!! My first one. Learned how to deal with the big poles and equipment including the Scotty electric downriggers. We will be (hopefully) bringing the King to Minnesota for sharing with you all. It was cleaned and frozen within 2 hours of being caught so it should be a treat."

The party for sharing the salmon took place in mid-August, 1999 on a Saturday afternoon at Dean and Denise's summer home on Lake Independence. There was more than enough to go around, and the salmon seemed to measure up to everyone's expectations.
